Message from the New Director<\/strong><\/h1>\nOctober 1, 2020<\/p>\n
Hokkaido University established the Global Institution for Collaborative Research and Education (GI-CoRE) in April 2014. GI-CoRE is a faculty organization under the direct control of the President that brings together distinguished researchers from around the world to conduct collaborative research and education with our University scholars. Aims include the support and promotion of international collaborative research and education that leverages the University\u2019s strength and distinctive features. Under the GI-CoRE system, research hub known as \u201cGlobal Station (GS)\u201d of each research field is implemented. GSs have a finite implementation period of five (5) years in principle to conduct intensive research and education activities.<\/p>\n
Thus far, seven (7) GSs in total have been implemented. It started from GS for Quantum Medical Science and Engineering and GS for Zoonosis Control on April 1, 2014, then GS for Food, Land and Water Resources in 2015, followed by GS for Soft Matter, GS for Big Data and Cybersecurity, GS for Arctic Research in 2016, and GS for Biosurfaces and Drug Discovery in 2020. All of the GSs have been highly evaluated from the global experts outside our university on both research and education activities.<\/p>\n
After the implementation period, GS projects are transitioned into affiliated faculties and centers, then certified as \u201cGI-CoRE Cooperating Hubs\u201d to further advance the outcomes obtained from each GS research and education activities in cooperation with GI-CoRE. Through this continuation, it benefits our university by developing globalization and contribution to the society to a greater extent.<\/p>\n
GI-CoRE will proceed with serving as the leading global hub of research and education, thereby solving future global issues, realizing a sustainable society, and transferring knowledge to graduate education. Thus, we will foster young researchers who will play an important role in the future.<\/p>\n
The launch of GI-CoRE was realized and made considerable achievements in the third Mid-Term Objective Period as a concrete mechanism for the Second Period goal attainment. We will make efforts to promote and advance the research and education activities of GI-CoRE towards the Fourth Period.<\/p>\n
