Message from the New Director<\/strong><\/h1>\nApril 1, 2026<\/p>\n
The Global Institution for Collaborative Research and Education (GI-CoRE) is a faculty organization under the direct control of the Hokkaido University President that brings together distinguished researchers from around the world to conduct collaborative research and education with scholars at Hokkaido University. \u00a0It was established in April 2014. Aims of GI-CoRE as a whole include supporting and promoting international collaborative research and education that leveraged the University\u2019s strengths and unique qualities. Under the GI-CoRE system, research hubs known as \u201cGlobal Stations (GS)\u201d across different research fields were launched until the end of FY2025 when the GS program came to a close. Each GS had an implementation period of five years to conduct intensive research and education activities.<\/p>\n
The Global Stations were kicked off with the formation of the GS for Quantum Medical Science and Engineering and GS for Zoonosis Control on April 1, 2014. It was then followed by the creation of the GS for Food, Land and Water Resources in 2015. The GS for Soft Matter, GS for Big Data and Cybersecurity, and the GS for Arctic Research were all opened the following year. Finally, the opening of the GS for Biosurfaces and Drug Discovery in 2020 and the GS for Indigenous Studies and Cultural Diversity in 2021 rounded off the GI-CoRE Global Station family for a current total of eight Global Stations. To date, all GSs have been highly evaluated in both research and educational activities from global experts on both the national and international stage.<\/p>\n
After the initial implementation period, GS projects were then transitioned into affiliated faculties and centers and certified as \u201cGI-CoRE Cooperating Hubs.\u201d These hubs were then expected to continue the research from each GS, in cooperation with GI-CoRE, and produce actionable results based on their findings. Through these ongoing cooperating hubs, Hokkaido University can not only pursue efforts in developing globalization but also continue providing meaningful contributions to society at large.<\/p>\n
Looking towards the future, we hope to continue GI-CoRE initiatives through the GI-CoRE Cooperating Hubs by supporting them as leading global hubs for research and education. With our ongoing efforts to solve global challenges, realize a sustainable society, and enhance graduate education by incorporating real-world research findings, we are committed to providing the young researchers of tomorrow with the tools they need to play an important role in the global community.<\/p>\n
