The International Archaeological Field School on Rebun Island, part of the Hokkaido Summer Institute 2025 and led by Director of GSI, Professor Hirofumi Kato, is now in progress. This unique program brings together students and researchers from around the world for hands-on archaeological training in one of Japan’s most stunning natural and cultural settings. Participants are excavating Jomon and Ainu heritage sites, learning advanced field methods, and engaging in cross-cultural exchange while surrounded by the alpine flower landscapes that make Rebun Island famous.
Among the participants this year is Professor Maa-ling Chen of National Taiwan University, a long-time collaborator with the Field School and a member of GSI.
